A likely source of failure in roof truss structures is rarely the truss system itself, rather it centers on the application of the trusses to the structure, or truss-to-truss. How many times have you been out to the field, to check on something, and noticed that the framing contractors tried to shave a bit off the budget by downgrading a hanger type, or even better, by not filling the holes of the hanger with nails/screws, to realize its full capacity? When a truss designer is deciding which hanger to use, the value #’s shown indicate maximum capacity, which is ONLY achieved by filling all the nail holes. Just as important, is the application of uplift connectors for high-wind zones. Has anyone ever seen the “less-than-stellar” type of shortcut mentioned? How do you combat it?
